The worlds of boy band pop and thrash metal collide in this festive romantic comedy, in which long-haired rocker Blake Cutter (Iwan Rheon) writes a mainstream ditty for his terminally ill niece (Helena Zengel) that could just have Christmas chart-topping appeal. After it starts to make waves on social media, New York manager Meg Rai (Frida Pinto) is tasked with making it a hit with an on-the-wane boy band to revive their career. But can she and Blake work together? Thus, the stage is set for a will-they-won't-they yarn with little in the way of surprises, and while Rheon is perhaps a tad too clean-cut to convince as a metalhead, Zengel is a delight as the worldly-wise would-be matchmaker. Musical theatre star Alfie Boe's cameo as a sleazy record company executive adds to the jollity, but the film is too rigidly rooted in by-the-book feel-good fun to leave a lasting impression.
